太田さんは漆芸家であるが、同時に木地師でもある。そして挽物師でもあるし、指物師でもある。

一本の原木が、その力強さを湛えたまま一碗に姿を変える迄太田さんの仕事は材となる木を選び、買い付ける所から始まる。

美しい木目を生かせるように時間をかけて乾燥させ、木工轆轤に鑿や鉋を巧みに用いて木地を作り、いよいよ最後に漆を重ねる。

その「最初から最後まで」を一人の眼で見続けているからこそ、太田さんの漆は森に生える木の息吹を覆い隠すのではなくより一層強く我々に伝えてくれるのだ。

Shuji Ota is a Japanese lacquer artist, but at the same time he is an artisan. He does a wood curving, wood wheeling, and woodworking joints by himself.

So he starts his creating process from selecting and purchasing a wood.

He takes long time to dry woods not to waste the beautiful grains. He does a wood wheeling on it using chisels and planes along with. And he applies lacquer on it, and the powerful bowls are finally given birth from a wood.

His works strongly convey the message from the lacquer forest, which could make the best use of a wood. That is because he cares about the process from the beginning to the finish.
