濱田庄司先生は主唱者であった柳宗悦氏と共に民藝運動の重要人物であり、益子を代表する陶芸家として世界的に知られています。同時に濱田先生にはコレクターとしての一面もありました。物置まで入れると19棟になるという古民家や建物コレクション、英国ウィンザーチェアやチャールズ・イームズなどの椅子や家具のコレクション、世界中から集めた美術品や工芸のコレクションなど枚挙にいとまがありませんでした。その一部は益子参考館などで見ることが出来ますが濱田先生という世界の幅の広さはご本人の作域の幅にも現れています。
当苑では2022年に初めて「THE MODERN HAMADA SHOJI」を開催させていただきました。濱田庄司先生の偉業を網羅したものではなく「モダニスト」としての作品が色濃く出たものだけを集めて、かなり偏りをもった展示会でした。
本年も同様の内容にこだわり、3点の方壷の名作を皮切りに40点近くの魅力的な作品を集め展示会の運びとなりました。是非ともご高覧いただけますようお願い申し上げます。
