ARAKAWA Toyozo

You can obviously find the organic warm forms and Shino glaze in the works by Toyozo Arakawa from 1950s ¬– 1970s. Since he has found Shino old kiln sites, he walked about mountains and valleys with ceramic piece samples in his hands, and tried to find a way to reproduce it at the Anagama kiln he built, where you can hear the sound of waterwheel.
The texture of Mogusa clay and the glaze of Shino and Seto-black, which no potters at our age can reproduce, were created from his aesthetics in the pursuit of harmonizing the works and nature beautifully.
